According to the National Association of HomeBuilders (NAHB), kitchen islands are one of the most popular kitchen design features among today’s consumers. The NAHB also reports that buyers of new homes have also indicated a desire for kitchen islands as well. Actually some 80% of homebuyers consider a kitchen island to be an absolute must. Some newer kitchen island ideas include the following features: rolling islands that can be used where a large island won’t fit, granite-topped islands, and islands with furniture like features such as pilasters.
There are certainly many pros to having a kitchen island. The first pro we will look at is that of extra counter space. Having resided in homes where counter space was at a minimum, the kitchen island was a life saver when cooking for larger gatherings. The second pro would be extra storage space. Who doesn’t need extra storage space in a kitchen? One kitchen owned was so small the laundry room next to the kitchen wound up being turned into a pantry as there was next to no storage in the kitchen.

There are also kitchen islands which can be moved as they are on rollers. This can be a benefit if the kitchen is small enough a stationary island could get in the way. The moveable island can be put into place when working in the kitchen, then moved when the tasks have been completed. One of the largest pros to a kitchen island is having that space for friends or family members to congregate in the kitchen area. One can place bar stools, or high seated chairs up against a kitchen island which invites that comfort zone. Most of us are aware that people tend to congregate to the kitchen area, after all it is the heart of the home.
Two is Better Than One: With the different levels, materials, and appliances that are all used to create a kitchen island, why stop with just one? Adding multiple islands creates not one, but two or more focal points for your kitchen. Multiple islands could be connected or remain separated in your kitchen to give yourself additional countertop space, gathering areas, and more. Putting an island on wheels is another way to make the island convenient, and is a perfect idea for people who love to entertain and need a space that can change in an instant.
